More teachers held, COTA decries action

Imphal, February 10, 2011:
State police today arrested 13 more teachers, including one female teacher, who have been fasting unto death under the aegis of the Council of Teachers� Association (COTA) at Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Imphal.
With the arrest of the 13 teachers today, the total number of teachers inside the jail has reached 141. Meanwhile, COTA decried the attempt of force feeding and torture to the teachers inside the jail by the jail authority.
In a press release, COTA alleged that the jail authority even beat some teachers in their attempt to force feed the teachers.
On the other hand, family members of the arrested teachers today held a meeting at Johnstone Higher Secondary School premises and resolved to stage a sit in protest in Imphal on February 15 since the state government has failed to release the jailed teachers till today.
At the same time, leaders of the Joint Administrative Council, of All Manipur Trade Unions Council (AMTUC) and All Manipur Government Employees Organisation (AMGEO), COTA and Manipur Secretariat Services Association (MASSA) today held a joint meeting at the office of the JAC and discussed the present stir of COTA and the non implementation of the 6th Central Revised Pay in toto.
The meeting resolved to hold a meeting of the General Council of the JAC, COTA and MASSA on February 24 to discuss more stringent stirs against the state government.
