Imphal, February 10, 2011:
A decision to demand Phungyar Assembly Constituency to be brought up to the status of a revenue district of the state was resolved in a meeting of the chiefs of villages of the constituency held today at the official quarters of MLA Wungnaosung Keishing.
It was resolved to submit a memorandum to the state government in this regard.
121 chiefs out of 146 chiefs took part in the meeting.
MLA Wungnaosung Keishing had called the meeting to discuss matters related with the sufferings of the people of his constituency and to find a way to overcome them.
The MLA pointed out that the constituency, he is representing is the most backward constituency in the state.
The constituency is larger then the areas of Ukhrul and Chingai A/Cs put together.
The Ukhrul district HQ is also very far away from the constituency.
As a result the district administration cannot cover most parts of the constituency.
On this reasoning, it will be better to demand a district status for Phungyar A/C it is felt that this demand has become a must, the MLA said.
According to the 2001 census, the population of the constituency is around 50,000.The Phungyar sub-division is 65 km away from Ukhrul district HQ, 83 kms from Kamjong, 143 kms from Kasom Khullen and 65 kms from Sahamphung sub-divisions.
Health delivery system, road communication and other developmental programmes are not reaching the constituency.
In the geographical point of view, Phungyar is totally isolated from the rest of Ukhrul district he went on to say, stressing on the need of making Phungyar a separate district.
He informed that the Development Committee, Phungyar and Development Committees of Kasom khullen, Kamjong, Phungyar and Sahamphung sub-divisions in association with District Demand Committee, Phungyar has also drafted a memorandum for submission to the Chief Minister on the demand.
The meeting decided to take an appointment to meet the Chief Minister to submit the memorandum.
