Engineer's house attacked, security guard killed, 4 injured

Imphal, February 10, 2011:
A hand grenade went off at the residence of an executive engineer and killed the escort commander of the engineer and wounded four others, two security personnel and two labourers.
Suspected UGs exploded the bomb at 4.20 pm at the residence of Chongtham Ranabir, EE division-I IFCD at Singjamei Chongtham Leikai which was guarded by personnel of 7th Bn MR.The guard commander and other personnel and labourers wounded in the blast were rushed to JNIMS hospital.
The injured commander, Havildar Khaidem Muhi (50), son of Kh Omar of Sugnu Bazar succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
The two injured security personnel were Moirangthem Ingocha (45) son of M Tomba of Tentha Khunou, Mutum Guno (36) son of M Gourahari of Kongba Khunou while the two labourers were identified as Shahjahan (22) son of Late Basir Ahmad of Thoubal Khekman and Md Amusana (25) son of Md Jamir of Hatta Mana Ingkhol.
Guno sustained splinter injuries in his right leg while Ingocha was injured in his left abdomen.
The two labourers were working at the house of the engineer.
Reports said that two youths on a motorcycle hurled the hand grenade from the front side of the engineer�s residence.
They also fired some rounds towards the house.
They escaped towards Chingamakha.
The incident took place no sooner had the EE come back from his office along with his escort personnel.
Government had been providing security to the EE following repeated attacks at his residence by UGs.
Ranabir revealed that he received monetary demand letters from different UGs.
Some groups also pressed him to award contract works and supply orders in favour of their men.
Which group launched the attack could not be ascertained but he had recently had a disagreement with activists of KCP (Noyon) group.
Additional security forces were rushed to the spot and immediately launched a search operation in and around Singjamei area.
Frisking and checking operations in all possible escape routes have been intensified.
There were no reports of any arrests or rounding up of suspects in the attack.
Earlier, in the day suspected UGs launched a failed bomb attack at the residence of another government officer, Wahengbam Nilamani, managing director, Handicraft, at Nongmeibung in Imphal east around 12.30 pm.
Personnel of the state police bomb disposal squad defused the bomb and set it off at a safe place around 2 pm.
Another hand grenade hurled at the house of the Director of Khadi and Village Industries, Mayengbam Rajendro at Chanam Pukhri Mapal under Singjamei PS around 7.30 pm also failed to explode, reports said.
