Imphal, January 16 2024:
In another testament to human kindness in the midst of the Manipur crisis, Alumni DM College of Science 1999 Batch (XII Science) and TDC 1999 Batch have successfully facilitated the ophthalmic (eye) surgery of two conflict survivors suffering from vision impairment.
The eye operations were performed at Yaima Eye Hospital, Khagempalli after the two conflict survivors with vision issues were discovered by the alumni groups during free health camps and eye check ups organised at Kumbi Terakha and Ithai Khunou relief camps.
In view of the poor financial condition of the conflict survivors, Yaima Eye Hospital performed the surgeries free of cost.
The two patients are Hemam Yaima Singh (75) from Churachandpur Torbung Waikhurok currently staying at Kumbi Terakha Relief Camp and Nongmaithem Roma Devi (35) from Phoubakchao Ikhai currently staying at Ithai Khunou Relief Camp.
Hemam Yaima Singh had cataract in both eyes and surgery was successfully performed on his right eye yesterday.
The left eye will be operated on after a month.
Similarly, Roma Devi had Pterygium on both eyes and surgery was successfully performed on her right eye yesterday giving her the gift of clear vision.
The remaining eye will also be treated after Roma, who is currently pregnant, delivers her baby in March.
On behalf of the two alumni groups, one Jina gave an account of the hard lives of conflict survivors at relief camps which is made worse by many degrees when they are faced with health issues.
In order to provide some assistance to these ailing victims, the two alumni groups have made monetary and material donations such as clothes, kids' shoes, toys, stationery items, thermo flasks, water bags etc.
In addition, with the participation of members of Alumni DM College of Science 1999 Batch who are now prominent doctors, three health camps were organised at different relief camps, she said.
Altogether 118 spectacles have been distributed to conflict survivors through free eye check up camps, Jina further added.
