Construction of Pre-Fabricated houses begins in Moirang

As announced by the Chief Minister to ensure prefabricated houses as an interim rehabilitation measure, construction of the same have been started at Sericulture Training Institute campus in Kwakta for inmates residing in relief camps opened in Moirang, Thanga and Kumbi areas.
The construction of the houses, undertaken by an outside company, is expected to be completed within a month.
Further, refurbication work of pre-existing structures such as quarter, hostel and guest house of the Sericulture Training Institute has also been started to facilitate speedy shiftment of relief camp inmates to the location.
The arrangement is expected to house as many as 500 internally displaced families.
Speaking exclusively to the Sangai Express, Consultant Engineer L Gokulchandra who is supervising the construction work said the construction worked began on the day the Chief Minister visited to inspect the area.
The measure was considered after assessing the issues faced by the inmates in the relief camps and to vacate these relief camps from the academic institutions, he said.
The inmates will be made to take shelter at these houses until the restive situation subside and normalcy is returned.
He also expressed shortage of dry land viable for construction of the pre-fabricated houses in the campus while highlighting that there are some low lying areas prone to water logging.
Efforts are underway to construct atleast 400 houses, he added.
With the revamp work of the pre-existing structures being underway, at least 70 families will be able to take shelter at the campus by July 15, he said.
Meanwhile, an apex body of 13 student organisations based in Churachandpur had claimed that the Sericulture Training Institute in Kwakta where the construction work of the pre-fabricated houses is underway, is under the jurisdiction of Churachandpur district.
Even as the campus is situated between Kwakta Municipal Ward No 8 and Ward No 9, the apex body of the student organisations has claimed that the premises of the institute is a part Phuaisanphai village under Churachandpur district and construction work should not be continued without the permission of village chief of Phuaisanphai - Khallal Vaiphei.
