Imphal, June 16, 2010: 16 MARATHA LI under Red Shield Div carried out a tree plantation programme at Ngangkhalawai village near Moirang.

Troops of 16 MARATHA LI along with members of a local volunteer organization, 'Helping Hand" have taken initiative in implementing this tree plantation drive.

A total of 2000 saplings based on the demand of locals which are popular like Banyan, Gulmohar and some other local varieties were planted during this joint effort.

The project is an initiative in enhancing beauty of the local environment around Loktak Lake and.educating the people to protect the beautiful environment of Manipur, informed in a press release issued today by PIB (DW).

Meanwhile, troops of 17 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector under HQ IGAR(South) undertook a "Plantation Drive" under Arboriculture Project with aim of saving and regenerating flora at Somsai garrison.

The project aims to reclaim the natural setting of yesteryears and preserve ecological balance in Somsai.

The Arboriculture project is planned over an area of 5 acres within Somsai garrison in three phases.

In phase - I of the project, 2100 saplings of various species including fruit bearing plants will be planted.

Phase - II and phase - III will be launched in June 2011 and 2012 respectively to further augment success of phase - I, stated a press release issued by PRO IG AR (S).

It further stated that Brig Harish Thukral, Commander,10 Sector and Mrs AnupamaThukral, President ARWWA 10 Sector inaugurated the event by planting the first sapling.

More than 200 persons including Officers, JCOs, other ranks and their families participated in the launch of the project.

Each plant was dedicated to the memory of someone's loved one who was not present to witness the spectacle.

On another occasion, achiever of 100% result in class XII (Science ) examination conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur, a felicitation function was held at Mangolnganbi College, Ningthoukhong on Saturday last (Jun 12). The function was presided over by Mr Govindas, Honorable MLA, Bishenpur dist.

The Commanding Officer of 4/8 Gorkha Rifles Colonel C Kartik Seshadri who was the Chief Guest, in his speech, congratulated the teaching staff for their hardwork and dedication in guiding the students to achieve such a commendable feat.

On the occasion the Commanding Officer also distributed prizes to the meritorious student and encouraged them to continue with their perseverance.

He reiterated the commitment of Red Shield Division towards creating a conducive and stressless environment in the state and promised all possible help to the school as and when required.

He reassured everyone that Indian Army will relentlessly strive to bring peace and development in Manipur, a PIB (DW) statement informed.

On the other hand, troops of 12 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector under HQ IGAR(South) organised a Medical camp at Phaikoh village of Ukhrul district on Jun 14.This was a first camp organized in this bordering area of Indo-Myanmar border.

A total 432 patients living in the villages along the border were given free medical treatment under the supervision of Capt Harsha D, the Medical Officer of 12 Assam Rifles.

The people from village Phaikoh and neighboring villages like Aishi, Molvailup, Kultuk and Huminethana came for this medical camp, a statement of PRO IG AR (S) said.
