Imphal, April 13 2022:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has filed a petition at Manipur High Court against the non holding of election for local self Government and other local bodies which have already completed its term nearly a year ago.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan today, MPCC senior spokesperson N Bhupendra stated that the PIL was filed to hold the election of urban and rural local bodies for Imphal East, Imphal West, Jiribam, Thoubal, and Kakching districts as well as Imphal Municipal Corporation where the same is pending.
He also stated that appointing a caretaker Chairman instead of holding the election is invalid and as such they should be removed.
Saying that the local body election is being delayed by the State Government on account of COVID-19, Bhupen continued that the PIL was moved as the State Assembly election has already been held and as the Covid situation has improved considerably.
N Bhupendra informed that the High Court of Manipur has directed the State Government and State Election Commission to give a reply at the earliest and fixed May 16 for the hearing.
