Many pay homage to martyrs on Martyrs' Day

Imphal, April 13 2022:
As observed every year on April 13, thousands paid homage to the martyrs at the memorial site located at Thangmeiband Cheiraoching on the occasion of Martyrs' Day on Wednesday.
People from the hills and the valley and belonging to different communities paid floral tributes at the memorial site consequent to order of Manipur High Court permitting the tribute event from 6am to 8pm.Large numbers of police personnel were also deployed in the area to prevent unwanted incidents from Occurring during the observance.
They verified the people at the foothill before allowing them to ascend and pay tributes.
Indian Red Cross Society provided first aid at the hill top and Shija Hospitals, RIMS and Newlife Medicare Services at the foothill as a part of the observance.
Speaking to media persons in this regard, family of a deceased member of the Kodompokpi incident, Khundrakpam Medana recounted that April 13 is being observed as Martyrs' Day every year.
However, the observance could not be held successfully in the last two years due to Covid-19 pandemic.
It is a delight to witness huge number of people from different communities and students coming to the memorial site for paying tributes to the martyrs, she added.
While stating that security forces caused inconveniences to those who came for paying homage at the memorial site in the previous years, she appreciated that the security personnel extended cooperation this year.
Remembering the Kodompokpi and Tekcham incidents, families and relatives of the deceased people also paid floral tributes at Kodompokpi and Tekcham memorial sites.
Moreover, candlelight vigil was held at the memorial sites of the martyrs located at Kwakeithel Moirangpurel and Kakwa Beni Leirak.
It may be mentioned here that nine members of People's Liberation Army (PLA) died in a gun battle with Indian army on April 13, 1982.The deceased members of PLA were Thoudam Kunjabihari of Thongju Nameirakpam Leikai, Th Chaoban alias Rajendra of Kwakeithel, M Premkumar of Tera Sapam Leirak, N Rajen Meetei of Kakwa Naorem Leikai, Th Loken of Kakwa Nameirakpam Leikai, L Dilip of Keishampat, M Paka of Heirok, S Kameshore of Heibongpokpi and Rk Khoirumba of Moreh.
