Convicts in U-morok vendor rape case released

Three people, who were convicted in the case of raping a U-morok vendor at Irom Meijrao area of Bishnupur district on March 22, 2012, have been released on Wednesday following the expiry of their jail term.
Ksh Kennedy (42) s/o Achou of Kong-pal Chanam Leikai, Ch Ibomcha (46) s/o Shamu of Thongju Part-II Boroi Makhong and S Rajen (43) s/o Gourababu of Uripok Sorbon Thingel Leikai were released from Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa around 4pm on Wednesday.
The trio had filed a criminal petition to the Manipur High Court with the chief secretary (representing the state government) and SP Manipur Central Jail, Sajiwa as respondents.
As per the petition, three of them petitioned the court for commutation Of the time they spent in the jail before their conviction, from their jail sentence under Section 481 of CrPC.
The petitioners were arrested in connection with an FIR registered by Bishnupur PS on March 22, 2012.After a complete trial, they were convicted of the charges under Section 367, 376 ((2) (G)) and 392 of IPC and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sessions Judge Manipur East on June 12, 2013.They were also ordered to pay fine.
After an appeal was made to the Court, their life imprisonment sentence was reduced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
They were imprisoned at Sajiwa Jail and the jail term of 10 years completed on March 22, 2022 after commuting the time they stayed in jail during the trial period.
They have also paid the fine as ordered by the court.
The High Court accepted the petition of the three convicts and directed the respondents to release them from jail.
Accordingly, additional public prose-cutor/GA (High Court) Manipur wrote to the special secretary (Home) and Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa SP on Wednesday for complying with the High Court's order followed by deputy secretary (Home) Dr Th Charanjit Singh conveying to IGP (Prison) for releasing the three convicts.
As such, Ksh Kennedy, Ch Ibomcha and S Rajen were released by the jail the authorities.
