Imphal, January 05 2023:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has decried that Manipur has found a place in the map of drug producing regions/States since the BJP Government was installed in the State.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan here today, MPCC vice-president and spokesman Hareshwar Goswami said that Manipur was earlier known as a transit route for smuggling drugs from the infamous Golden Triangle but after the BJP-led Government was installed in the State, Manipur has found its place in the map of drug producing regions.
Although the State Government led by Chief Minister N Biren has been initiating strong measures against the drug menace since some years back, the BJP-led Government's first impression of the new year is the detention of Sanaleibak daily Editor Hemanta Kumar Ningomba for giving a few suggestions to make the Government's War on Drugs effective, Hareshwar Goswami decried.
A photograph of a well known woman apparently dancing in the midst of poppy plants at an unknown hill location has been seen in social media but there has been no report of taking up any action against the particular woman, said the MPCC vice-president.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah would arrive here this evening on a two-day visit to the State and he would distribute appointment letters to newly appointed IRB personnel and employees of Social Welfare Department and RD&PR Department.
Moreover, the Union Home Minister would also facilitate village chiefs and chairmen who have switched from poppy plantations to other crops.
But this is rather surprising and it is akin to indirectly supporting illegal activities, the MPCC spokesman remarked.
He went on to question how huge consignments of drugs which originated from Manipur were seized in other States of the country.
Hareshwar asserted that the War on Drugs is just an eyewash.
The Government's move to lift prohibition on alcohol has also rendered the War on Drugs meaningless.
The BJP-led Govt has been deceiving the masses and it is only good at lip-service, he added.
