Poppy plants destroyed, village chiefs held

As a part of the government's war on drugs campaign, a combined team of security forces destroyed 50 acres of poppy cultivations at different parts of Chandel and Kangpokpi districts on Wednesday and Thursday and arrested two village chiefs.
According to police, a joint team of Chandel district police and 8 MR Leikun along with administrative support of 15 AR of Khongtal COB led by SDPO/Chandel destroyed poppy plants which were found growing in around 35 acres of land in Kholmunlen and Khongtal areas under Chakpikrong Sub-division of Chandel district located near the Indo-Myanmar border on Thursday.
During the drive, opium weighing about 2.500 kg packed in plastic polythene was also recovered from a hut and more than 10 huts were burnt down.
On the other-hand, a joint team comprising Kangpokpi district police, NAB, Forest department and SDO Saikul carried out poppy plant destruction drive near Pangjang village, Saikul in Kangpokpi district.
The combined team destroyed around 15 acres of poppy plantation and a regular case has been registered in this regard, for further investigation.
Meanwhile, in continuation of the drive being carried out since December 30 along the hill ranges of Sehjang village by a combined team, Kangpokpi district police arrested two village chiefs namely Satlal Khongsai (57), son of Dempao Khongsai of S Saikot village, IT Road and Satkhohao Kipgen (36), son of Ngamthang Kipgen Kholen village, 8 Mile, Chawangkining, both in Kangpokpi district.
A regular case has been registered against them for further investigation, it informed.
In the past two days (Wednesday and Thursday), 50 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed, while on Thursday, 2.500 kg of opium in liquid form were recovered and two village chiefs arrested, the police source added.
