Imphal, April 12 2023:
With the call to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) getting louder, Peace and Development Coordination Committee Khundrakpam has appealed to the Government to carry out the exercise in the State.
At Manipur Press Club today, the committee's general secretary Thoudam Hemjit said the issue of influx of illegal immigrants in the State is real and if not addressed appropriately, the indigenous population may soon find themselves to be minorities in their own land.
Stating that the committee fully endorses the demand for carrying out NRC exercise in the State, Hemjit appreciated several CSOs including Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) and other student bodies for spearheading the movement.
Noting that several organisations had recently staged a protest in Delhi demanding implementation of the NRC in Manipur, he said the Peace and Development Coordinating Committee Khundrakpam will lend full in future course of action regarding the movement.
He also informed that the committee will be launching a drive today to identify and detect illegal immigrants within Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency.
Further, sale of land to non-indigenous people has been banned.
The committee will take legal action against any person who, for personal gain, is found harbouring and giving forged documents including Aadhaar or job cards to illegal immigrants.
Also, no villages under Khundrakpam Assembly Constituency may be given "new names", he said.
