Imphal, April 12 2023:
The signing of the Indo-Myanmar agreement has completed 27 years but there has been no relevant infrastructure development or enactment of trade policy, stated Indo-Myanmar Border Trade Union (IMBTU) president W Nabachandra.
Addressing media persons at IMBTU office, Babupara, here, on Wednesday, Nabachandra said that Indo-Myanmar agreement was signed on January 21, 1994 between officials of both India and Myanmar.
After completing formalities for the border trade as per the agreement, a station of the customs division was opened in Moreh on April 15, 1995 and accordingly commenced the cross-border trading activities.
However, it is very unfortunate that no office for border trade including office of the director general of foreign trade has been opened till date and export promotion council is yet to be constituted, he said, and appealed to the government to open bank related with export-import at the earliest.
According to W Nabachandra, the state government needs to formulate a trade policy for promoting businessmen involved in border trade.
The Industrial and Investment Policy brought out by the department of textiles, commerce & industries in November, 2017 did not mention anything about border trade, he pointed out, and stressed the need for the state government to conduct awareness programme from time to time so that people could have international trade knowledge.
