Imphal, December 10 2022:
Students, specially those pursuing law should take pro-active roles in raising awareness about law and human rights, said Manipur University Vice Chancellor Professor N Lokendra today.
He made this statement while speaking at an "International Human Rights Day 2022" observance organised by the Department of Law, MU at its premises.
The observance was held under the theme "Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All" .
Speaking as chief guest, Professor N Lokendra said many issues and problems in the society may be avoided if people are well aware of the law and the Constitution of India.
The pluralistic and diverse North East region is facing many social and ethnic related problems and issues.
When students are well versed with the knowledge of the Constitution and law, they may be able to solve many of the issues.
Today's society is facing influences of western 'elements', some of which are a result of the British colonial past, he said, hinting that the students should not be easily influenced and they should try to understand things based on the right context.
He expressed happiness that Manipur University is growing and expanding with the addition of many new trades and departments.
Manipur University did not have a Law Department earlier, he said, advising the faculties of the Law Department to discuss the possibility of opening Integrated LLB programme.
Manipur University Finance Officer Professor Elangbam Nixon, Manipur State Human Rights Commission former Member Ng Nongyai and Imphal Times Editor Rinku Khumukcham also attended the observance.
