Imphal, December 10 2022:
Like in the past, several rights organisations and institutions observed International Human Rights Day on the global theme 'Dignity, Freedom and Justice for all' on Saturday.
Committee on Human Rights (COHR) observed the Day at AMUCO conference hall located at Kwakeithel with the attendance of Manipur Human Rights Commission former acting chairperson Khaidem Mani, COHR chairman Phulindro Konsam, AMUCO advisor Ito Tongbram and Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi Manipur vice president Soraisam Memcha as presidium members.
Speaking at the observance, Khaidem Mani recounted that government of Manipur declared the state as disturbed area which allows imposition of the black law 'AFSPA' in the state and asserted that as head of the state it is prerogative of the chief minister to lift the same.
However, as they could not repeal the pro-military law without the consent of the centre, it is could be safely stated that the CM as well as the cabinet ministers have failed to exercise their rights, he claimed.
As people of Manipur do not enjoy their rights similar to citizens of other states it is obvious that state's denizens are reduced to second-class citizens of the country.
Meanwhile, in connection with the Rights' Day observance, Human Rights Council (HRC), Manipur convenor Joy Chingakham told newspersons at Manipur Press Club here, that the council will organise awareness programmes and visit hills and plains of the state from December 30 to check whether human rights are violated in the areas.
Informing that the council was formed on August 9, 2021 to safeguard rights of the indigenous people, he continued that the council will visit different districts including Senapati, Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Thoubal from December 30 and inspect children's homes to check whether their rights are violated or not.
Private hostels will also be checked in this regard.
Highlighting lack of human rights organisations in the state, he maintained that Human Rights Commission is vital for the state.
After the demand for setting up of the commission, it was fortunately established but the term of acting chairperson Khaidem Mani has lapsed thus leaving the chairperson's post vacant.
Drawing the attention of the government for filling up the post at the earliest, he appealed for appointment of two members of the commission along with the chairperson.
Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and GP Women's College also organised International Human Rights Day at the college's central hall here.
The observance was attended by Education/Higher & Technical Education commissioner M Harekrishna as chief guest, College principal Dr Rajkumari Tamphasana as president and MHRC deputy secretary E Ananda as guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, M Harekrishna highlighted that the observance is held to ensure the right, dignity, freedom and justice to all people across the globe.
Every person living in the country should try to avail their rights and benefits and in order to make the people aware about their rights, workshop, seminar and awareness programme are must, he added.
Similar observance was also organised by Universal Mothers' Organisation (UMO) at Manipur Press Club with former MHRC member Ng Nongyai, UMO president M Sorojini Leima and social activist Joykishore as presidium members.
A two-minute silence was also observed as a tribute to the deceased women who laid down their lives for the state.
As a part of the observance, UMO also resolved to translate every regulation related to human rights in languages of every community residing in the state.
