WACA celebrates 16th foundation day

Imphal, December 10 2022:
Women's Art & Cultural Association (WACA) celebrated its 16th Foundation Day along with valedictory function of a month long training cum production on 'Nongthangleima' (Shumang Kumhei) at Brahmapur Harikhagok Makhong, Palace Compound here on Saturday.
The event was attended by Manipur University of Culture vice chancellor Prof P Gun indro as chief guest, Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Sougrakpam Hemanta as president and Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC), Government of India member Th Swarankumar as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Prof P Gunindro said that Shumang Leela is rare and unique culture not found in other parts of the world.
The art form is generally performed either by an all-men group or an all-women group and never co-ed, he remarked.
He then urged for concrete action for preservation of the state's culture, while appreciating WACA's efforts in this regard.
As part of the function, recipients of awards of the 49th and 50th All Manipur State Shumang Festivals were felicitated.
