RK Dhiren has become the first Manipuri to be promoted to the post of IGP in a paramilitary force.
RK Dhiren hails from Nongmeibung Nambam Chuthek and graduated from DM College, then under Gauhati University.
He was commissioned as District Officer in ITBP on June 2, 1980 .
In the past over 30 years, he underwent and completed a number of training courses such as Coy Cdr, Tactics & Adm Course, Conventional Warfare & Tactics Course, Bank Security Course, Ranger Course (NSG), Weapons & Tactics Course, Mountaineering (Basic) Course, Commando Course, Higher Command Course etc.
When in ITBP Special Operation at Delhi, he was given the responsibility of looking after security measures of many national and international events.

For his outstanding service, the President of India conferred him the Commendation/Appreciation Letter and medal.
He also served as the personal bodyguard of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
He then took part in many major anti-terrorist operations in Punjab between 1986 and 1991 when he was with NSG on deputation.
He took key responsibility in ensuring security for VVIPs when he was with the VIP Protection Squadron of NSG.
He was with Manipur Police from 1995 to 2000 on deputation.
He took key roles in the establishment of 1st IRB battalion.
He has been already honoured with Garaj Medal, Parakarma Padak, President's Commendation and Insignia.
RK Dhiren was promoted to the rank of IGP by an order issued by the office of the Director General, ITBP on February 21 with due approval of the Appointment Committee of Cabinet.
In accordance to the order, Dhiren would take over as the Commander of ITBP North East Frontier based at Shillong.
