Month-long theatre workshop underway

A month-long theatre workshop on 'Moirang Parva', which is being jointly organised by Manipur State Shumang Leela Council (MSSLC) and Theatre Mirror, Imphal, commenced from Sunday at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen, Palace Compound, here.
Manipur State Cooperative Union president L Tompishak and MSSLC president M Purnimashi attended the inaugural function as chief guest and president respectively while MSSLC lifetime president Ph Gunachandra, camp director of the workshop Sougrakpam Hemanta and project director Naba Wareppa (Padmashri) were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Naba Wareppa stressed the need for developing a repertory based on the true concept and philosophy of Shumang Leela and said that the workshop is a means towards achieving this goal.
He also drew attention of the government towards keeping alive Shumang Leela, which is a unique traditional theatre form of Manipur.
Tompishak pointed out that there is no institution or school for formal education on Shumang Leela.
In the absence of such facility, the annual workshop of MSSLC and Theatre Mirror is doing a commendable job by providing training to young and enthusiastic artistes, he noted.
Altogether, 50 trainees are participating in the workshop, which will continue till July 19 .
