Public meet dissects drugs issue

Kanglei People against Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Kanglei Panas) organised a public meeting against psychotropic substances along with forming its Nambol Local Council and electing new office bearers at Nambol Keithel community hall on Sunday.
The programme was attended by health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh as chief guest, Development and Protection United Voluntary Organisation, Nambol president Taorem Khaba Khuman as presi -dent, while Bishnupur additional SP (L&O) Satyam Takhelambam, Anti-Drug Cell Bishnupur convener Ch Robin Singh, Kanglei Panas Bishnupur president RK Tombisana Leima, legal advisor Ch Ibechaobi Leima and Nambol police station OC A Nabakanta Sharma were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ranjan expressed serious concern that though Manipur ii a small state with population of about 28 lakh only, it has been constantly facing the issue of drug for many years due to its proximity to the infamous golden triangle and porous interna tional border with Myanmar.
Government is very keen on its 'War on Drugs' campaign and its agencies have been seizing huge consignment of drugs on daily basis, he emphasised, and urged the gathering to contribute their mite checking the menace of drugs.
The minister pointed out that setting up of more and rehabilitation centres in the state underscores increase in the number of drug addicts.
Later, L Shanti Leima, M Shakhitombi Leima, S Thaja Leima and H Lata Leima were elected as Kariglei Panas Nambol Local Council president, general secretary, publicity secretary and treasurer respectively.
