Imphal, June 19 2022:
Women Action for Development (WAD) organised a consultation programme on the topic 'The issue of women and children & questioning the future of Manipur' at Hotel Classic here on Sunday.
Speaking at the event, WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam expressed concern over the rising number of uxoricide (killing one's wife) and filicide (killing one's child) cases in the state, with almost zero incentive to look into the origin of the crime.
The departments concerned need to look into the matter with all seriousness as it is their duty instead of just waiting for the monthly pay, which is sourced from taxes paid by the people.
Anymore delay in this regard will not be good for the society as it certain to see ruination of Manipur, she cautioned.
Sobita continued: "It would be best not to forget that a society cannot exist without women.
Thus, all of us need to understand this growing need to save Manipur's future instead of continuing to wonder and depend on the government for every little thing.
Instead of depending on the 60 MLAs or waiting for someone to take on the mantle, we, as the people of Manipur, need to work together to forge a safe future for the state".
Sobita further said that Manipur is not a re-sourceless state.
On the contrary, many are keeping a close watch on the state's resources.
Thus, it is time to work together to save Manipur and its society, while there is still time, especially for the future generations of the state.
During the programme, United NGO Mission Manipur secretary U Nobokishore spoke on 'Emerging Trends of Violence Against Women And Future Of Manipur'; Manipur University Manipuri Department Professor Dr Naorem Sanatomba on 'Women in Manipur'; Crime Against Women SP H Sangamita on 'Special mechanism which could be adapted by the law enforcing agencies and people of Manipur to curb the violence against women and children'; District and Sessions Court Manipur retired Judge A Noutuneshwari on 'What are the mechanisms to speed up the trial of cases with regard to crimes against women and children (Civil and criminal cases)' and Sanaleibak editor Hemanta Kumar Ningomba on 'The need of follow up report ing with regards to the case of violence against women and children', as resource persons.
The programme was also attended by Manipur Uni versity Economics Department Associate Professor Dr Chinglen Maisnam.
