Noney, June 19 2022:
The Khoupum Area Farmers Welfare Association has appealed to the Government and Department concerned to assess the flash flood caused by incessant rainfall in the last 48 hours.
In a release, the association informed that Khoupum is a deep low lying area having 1451 hectares of arable land, out of which 850 hectares are under irrigated area as per CADA reports (Gom) .
The association stated that paddy/crop fields have been extensively damaged due to flood, leaving the farmers in complete dismay.
"There is complete lack of maintenance of river banks which leads to breach of river banks causing floods whenever rainfall of such magnitude occurs", it added.
The Khoupum Area Farmers Welfare Association appealed to the field officers to assess the flood condition at the earliest and prepare a detailed field report for onward submission to the Department concerned so that necessary measures could be taken up on time to mitigate the woes and suffering of poor farmers.
The association also informed that landslides have occurred in many parts of the area causing extensive damage to all the standing horticulture crops, affecting about 650 hectares.
"Vegetables have also been washed away by landslides badly affecting the small-scale traders who rely on vegetable crops as a source of their economic survival", it added.
The Khoupum Area Farmers Welfare Association further informed that landslides along the Tongjil-Maril road have been causing hardships to commuters and travellers.
