Sexual assault accused sent to jail

Imphal, June 19 2022:
The Additional Session Judge, Imphal East on Saturday sent one 22 years old man to judicial custody till July 2 on the charge of sexually assaulting a woman multiple times on the pretext of marrying the victim.
Accused Salam Kennedy (22), s/o Matumba of Arong Khunjao Makha Leikai was produced before the Court on completion of his police custody period by the IO of the case Additional SP (Investigative Unit Crime Against Women, Imphal West) Rattana Ngasepam along with a prayer to remand him to judicial custody.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, filed a remand objection and sought bail.
Through an APP, the IO of the case submitted that the victim lodged a complaint to Women Police Station, Imphal West, claiming that she was sexually assaulted by her boyfriend on January 1, 2022 in a hotel at North AOC.
The complainant also claimed that she was sexually assaulted on Novemeber 23, 2021 too in a hotel at MG Avenue.
A few days later, the accused proposed to the victim and started an intimate relationship by staying under one roof, the IO claimed.
Saying that the victim was found to be pregnant in December 2021 and the victim informed the accused about the situation, the IO claimed that the accused ignored the victim since then and even threatened to go for abortion.
It was learned that the accused had eloped with a woman in November 2021, the IO said.
The IO also submitted that the previous IO tried to arrest the accused but he was given anticipatory bail by the Court which was rejected later.
The accused also filed another anticipatory bail before the High Court of Manipur but the same was also rejected on June 6, 2022 and he was subsequently arrested on June 8 .
The IO said that the accused didn't intend to marry the victim as he was already married to another woman.
The defence counsel, on the other hand, claimed that the accused has been falsely implicated in the case.
The Court, after hearing both parties and on perusal of the case record, remanded the accused to judicial custody till July 2 .
