Asian International University (AIU) observed Non-Resident Indian (NRI) Day (Pravasi Bharatiya Divas) at the Ghari campus of the varsity on Monday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, former MLA Dr Kh Loken pointed out that the day marked the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa and subsequent participation in the Indian Freedom Movement in 1915 .
While recounting that the first observance was held in 2002 under the initiative of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Loken pointed out that there are several Indians, including Manipuris, who have settled in foreign countries after securing jobs.

He appreciated AIU for observing the day.
AIU director of research Dr Ashish Kumar Rai presided over the event which was also attended by AIU dean (Administration) Sunjay Banerjee, G hari Women's Development Center president Chungkham Geeta and Ghari Youth Club president Phamdom Prama Manga-ngcha as guests of honour.
