Human chain formed to back ST demand

Bishnupur, January 09 2023:
A human chain was formed at Bishnupur Bazar Temporary Market on Monday demanding implementation of the memorandum submitted to the Union government in 2012 for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list of the Constitution of India.
Speaking in connection with the protest, Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM) Bishnupur District Branch secretary Loitongbam Prem-chand Singh informed that the protest was staged to press the state government submit the Ethnography Report and latest Socio Economy Survey Report to the centre for formal process to enlist Meetei in the ST list.
In pursuance of the demand, STDCM had organised public meets, mass sloganeering, human chains, etc., at various places along with submitting memorandums to 29 MLAs including ministers, he added.
L Premchand continued that all the 29 legislators have also extended their support for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list.
As part of the protest on Monday, the protestors shouted slogans and held banners inscribed with words supporting inclusion of Meetei in the ST list, saving the indigenous Meetei community, sending recommendation to the centre, etc.
