Floral tributes paid to War martyrs

Rich floral tributes were paid on Wednesday to martyrs of the Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 at Thoubal Athokpam where Yaiskullakpa and Sengoisana laid down their lives trying to defend Manipur from the invading British force.
According to Justice Committee and Sanakhya Yaiskullakpa, Sanakhya Sengoisana Memorial Committee of Ningthemcha Ningsing Lup, the first battle of Anglo-Manipuri War, 1891 occurred on April 6 at Thoubal Athokpam where many Manipuri soldiers including Sanakhya Yaiskullakpa and Sanakhya Sengoisana laid down their lives.
Remembering the martyrs, the committee and the Lup paid rich floral tributes to them at the battle site at Thoubal Athokpam from 10am on Wednesday.
According to a statement of Committee convener Birjit, Manipuri soldiers killed five British officers including Assam chief commissioner and Manipur's political agent on March 24, 1891 at Kangla.
The then British jamandar Birbal Nagarkati went to Tamu in Burma ana informed Lt Grant about the incident.
Accordingly, the British declared war against Manipur on March 31, 1891 .
The British troop from Tamu led by Lt Grant moved towards Manipur.
After getting the report, Manipur sent 100 soldiers led by Yengkhoiba Major General to fight the British and the first battle was fought at Thoubal Athokpam where around 20 Manipuri soldiers including Sanakhya Yaiskullakpa and Sanakhya Sengoisana were killed, the Lup said and urged government to take steps for constructing a memorial site at Thoubal Athokpam battle site.
