Man sentenced to RI for raping minor

Imphal, April 21 2022:
Special Judge, Fast Track Court (POCSO) No 1 on Thursday sentenced one Khwairakpam Maheshwor alias Sanahal, who was convicted of raping a minor girl on March 25, 2016, to six years' rigorous imprison ment.
Maheshwor of Nambol Kha Jiri was convicted of raping the minor by the Court on April 16 under Section 4 of POCSO Act.
He was kept in custody at Sajiwa Jail and produced before the court on Thursday for the sentence hearing.
During the hearing, the Special PP appealed to the court for awarding strictest punishment to Maheshwor for abducting and raping an underage female student.
The defence counsel submitted to the Court that Maheshwor was the breadwinner of his family and he did not have any prior criminal record.
As such, he prayed to the court for minimum punishment.
After listening to submissions from both sides, the Court sentenced Maheshwor to 7 years' rigorous imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which he would have to stay in jail for 3 more months.
It further ordered that the 6 months that the convict had stayed in jail during the trial period will be commutated from his total sentence period and as such, he will have to serve a jail term of 6 years and 6 months.
