Imphal, October 01 2022: Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Satyabrata has expressed concern over the rising number of old age homes in the state while stating that it is not a good sign considering where the society is heading.

He was attending as chief guest of the observance of International Day of Older Persons organised by Senior Citizens' Forum, Imphal East at Dharmalaya hall, Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai on Saturday.

PHE minister L Susindro was the functional president while Lamlai MLA Kh Ibomcha attended as guest of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Satyabrata observed how the younger generation of the society is ill-treating the older people and how aged parents are kept in old age homes.

Though it is good to see the old age homes providing a safe shelter to the elder people by taking good care, it is, however, not a good sign but an indication of children mistreating their parents when they become old, Satyabrata pointed.

He stressed the need for finding out older people who are facing difficult situations so as to provide them necessary help.

Advocate B Supriya spoke on 'resilience of older people in a changing world'.

Several senior citizens were also honoured by presenting gifts on the occasion.

On the other hand, All Manipur Senior Citizens' Welfare Association organised the observance under the theme 'Resilience and contribution of Older Women' at the old age home located at Mongsangei Arubam Ingkhol on Saturday.

Imphal West ZP Adhyaksha RK Taruni and association president Sougrakpam Kunjabihari attended the event as chief guest and president respectively while Hiyangthang ZP member Sarangthem Silasana, 109 battalion CRPF deputy commandant Parvinder Kaur and land donor of the Home Akoijam Ingobi were present as guests of honour.

Inmates of the Home and invitee elderly people were honoured by presenting gifts on the occasion.

CCPUR: Office of District Social Welfare Officer, Churachandpur organised the International Day of Older Persons 2022 under the theme 'The resilience and contribution of older women' at B Phaichan, Tuibong in Churachandpur district on Saturday.

Advisor to CM Vungzagin Valte, Churachandpur ADM Yumnam Nelson and DSWO Angom Tamphasana Chanu attended the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, ex-MLA Vungzagin Valte called for taking good care of the elderly people and commended the DSWO office for organising the observance and honouring elderly people.

DSWO Tamphasana said that the department has been observing the day every year, and thanked the DC, elected representatives, officials concerned and the public for their support in organising the event.

Informing that the department will continue to work for the welfare of society, she called for continuous support from all.

Blankets were presented to 134 select elderly people from different parts of Churachandpur district on the occasion.

THOUBAL: As in other parts of the world, District Social Welfare Office, Kamjong observed the International Day of Older Persons at Rural People Development Organisation (RPDO) hall, Kasom Khullen on Saturday.
