Noney landslide rescue operation to wind up today

Relief & Disaster Management minister Awangbow Newmai has stated that the rescue operation at the Makhuam village landslide site will continue till Wednesday evening while a review meeting will be held to decide further course of action.
The minister made the announcement on Tuesday while monitoring the on-going search operation at Tupul railway construction landslide-hit site, Makhuam village, Noney district.
With no body found on Tuesday, the 20th day of the search operation, the number of missing persons remains at five.
In all, 56 bodies of the victims have been recovered till date.
A review meeting was held at Noney DC office's conference room to have an update on the search operation and whether to continue or not.
"We have decided to call off the search operation officially by tomorrow evening.
But the final decision will be taken after consultation with the chief minister tomorrow," minister Awangbow informed.
The minister said that the government has put in concerted efforts in the rescue and search
operation of the missing people.
During the visit, he thanked the rescue team, civil and voluntary organisations and local villagers for their relentless and tireless efforts.
He also thanked the railway officials and the district administration for their donations to the relief committee.
"I pray and wish that such calamity does not happen again in our area," he added.
The village authority of Makhuam placed a charter of demands before the state and railway authorities for needful compensation and other charitable provisions.
The memorandum includes monetary compensation, suitable employment to the family members of landslide victims and creating a suitable dumping site to maintain ecological balance amongst others.
Additional chief secretary MH Khan, Noney DC H Guite, SP M Gopaldas, ADC S Khapudang,
brigadier-ranked offices of the Assam Rifles, engineers from the railways, officials of SDRF, NDRF & CRPF, village leaders of Makhuam (Marangching) and CSO leaders were also present at the meeting.
Earlier in the day, minister Awangbow told newspersons at the landslide site that another final round of meeting with the victims' families and village authority leaders of Makhuam will be held on Wednesday with chief minister N Biren in the presence of railways officials at the CM's Bungalow and final decision will be taken and settled the charter of demands made by the victims' families and the villagers of Makhuam.
While speaking to media persons, Awangbow Newmai thanked the rescue team including local volunteers/villagers who rendered their selfless humanitarian services.
He said, "Words are not enough to say thank you to all the people involved in the intense search & rescue operation.
May God bless your efforts to help others" .
Among others, the minister was accompanied by Tamenglong ADC ex-members Micah Panmei and Hatlhing Doungel, and social worker Akhon Kamei.
Mention may be made that 56 bodies have been recovered from the debris while the five missing persons including 4 villagers and one worker of a construction company.
