Imphal, July 19 2022:
Nambul Brink Cultural Association (NBCA) has raised strong objection against the government's policy of taking up a government project in Macha Ibemma Loukol, an agricultural tract located in Takyel
Khongbal Maning Leikai, and demanded immediate withdrawal of the proposed project.
Addressing a press meet on Tuesday, NBCA finance and publicity secretary Sanjenbam Loken said that they came to know about
the project when government officials came for spot survey on Tuesday without giving any prior information to the elected member, club and Meira Paibi associations of the area.
Though people of the area have no objection to any development project of the government, using agricultural land for such project is unacceptable as it contravenes the government's own commitment of protecting paddy land for which it had enacted Manipur Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetlands Act 2014 .
Besides, the paddy field in the area, measuring around four hectares, has been the main source of income for the local Lai Haraoba committee for years, he said.
Appealing to the government to reconsider the plan and shift the project to another location, the secretary warned of launching intense agitation by the local residents in order to protect the paddy land.
Members of local club, Meira Paibi and Lai Committee also attended the press meet and shouted slogans against the proposed project.
