Report on cancer risk factors released

RIMS Director Prof A Santa Singh released the report on "Monitoring survey of cancer risk factors and health system response in North East Region (NER), Manipur for 2019-20" published by Department of Pathology, RIMS and ICMR- NCDIR at the Banting Hall of RIMS, today.
The programme was graced by Prof A Santa Singh; State Mission Director, State Health Society, NHM, Manipur Dr Ningombam Somorjit, Dean (Academic), RIMS Prof Th Meera and RIMS Medical Superintendent Prof Sanjib Nepram as presidium members.

Dr Prashant Mathur also attended the programme virtually.
At the function, Prof Santa said that the report is a very important document as it mentions general risk factors for cancer.
Prof Santa continued that North East States have a high cancer rate and as such it is imperative to create cancer awareness among the people.
Dr Sushma Khuraijam, Professor & Head Principal Investigator PBCR, PBCS & HBCR POCSS, Department of Pathology RIMS, said that cancer is among the top five leading causes of death in Manipur.
Saying that the aim of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of major cancer associated with behavioural and metabolic risk factor and patten of their distribution in the population, she added that the response of the health system towards cancer prevention and control at the primary and secondary level in public as well as private sector and health facilities has also been assessed in this project.
The findings from the survey will form a baseline for monitoring risk factors of cancer for comparison in subsequent surveys, she continued and expressed hope that the findings will be incorporated to improve and augment the existing programme regarding prevention and treatment of cancer.
