Imphal, February 10 2023:
Taking strong exception to the attempt to assault Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) president Ningthoujam Popilal by some people as he came out after participating in a TV discussion programme on the Government's War on Drugs, womenfolk of Phayeng staged a protest demonstration today.
Meanwhile PCC member and former Minister Ningthoujam Biren has decried the City police's attempt to arrest Popilal who lodged a complaint to the police station seeking protection.
Placards inscribed with words rejecting the allegations levelled against Popilal were put up at the protest demonstration staged today at Phayeng.
A younger sister of Popilal who took part in the protest demonstration told media persons that her brother was escorted by police till their home as three individuals tried to physically assault Popilal when he came out after taking part in a panel discussion programme of Impact TV on February 8 .
Even as a complaint was lodged at City police station the next day, the police neither registered any FIR nor did they take up any action, the sister said.
"Ironically, a large number of police personnel came to our house last night and asked for Popilal alleging that he assaulted someone", the woman said.
On being enquired, police said that the man was assaulted at around 9 pm but Popilal was teaching children at home at that time, she continued.
She then appealed to the Government to ascertain the facts of the incidents and let them live in peace.
Saying that Popilal is his grandson, former Minister Ningthoujam Biren maintained that Popilal did not make any offensive statement during the panel discussion programme hosted by Impact TV.
It is a matter of grave concern that police arrested a huge consignment of drugs from their own colleagues at Kuraopokpi, near Pallel on January 16, he said adding that he supports the Government's War on Drugs.
Following the attempt to assault him, Popilal lodged a complaint to police seeking protection.
However, police have been trying to take Popilal in their custody instead of taking up any security measures, he decried.
Claiming that Popilal is an innocent Congress worker, Ningthoujam Biren appealed to the Government to ensure that no harm comes to Popilal.
