Imphal, February 10 2023:
The agitation of Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) and other women organisations against the government's decision to legalise liquor continues with a sit-in protest staged at Thounaojam Awang community hall in Kakching district on Friday.
All Manipur Women's Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Thoubal District United Women's Development Organisation (THOUBAL IMA), Thounaojam Apunba Nupi Lup and CADA jointly organised the protest demonstration.
According to a statement released by CADA secretary general Geetchandra Mangang, CADA president Hijam Priyokumar pointed out that the state is witnessing increasing usage of intoxicants by youth, and in such a situation legalising liquor will only darken the future of the state.
It was due to the rising ill-effects of alcohol use in the society that womenfolk of the state had to take a stand against it, he said while addressing the protestors, while affirming that to protect the future generation of Manipur liquor and other intoxicants must be effectively banned in the state.
Meanwhile, CADA vice president Ningthoujam Doren pressed the government to revoke its order and pass a strong prohibition law and ensure that it is 100 per cent enforced.
At the sit-in protest, the protestors shouted slogans and held placards with wordings denouncing legalisation of liquor in the state, it further conveyed.
