Imphal, December 21 2021:
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president and Mayang Imphal ex-MLA Dr Khumujam Ratankumar has appealed to all to prevent Manipur Police Department from becoming the personal department of BJP MLAs, ministers and their families.
Addressing a press meet held at his residence on Tuesday, Dr Ratankumar condemned the alleged excessive act committed by the police on the midnight of December 12 following a quarrel at Mayang Imphal Konchak Sapam Mamang Leikai, wherein the police forcefully searched the residences of several Congress workers to arrest them and also ransacked their properties, including smashing doors and windows during the process.
He said that Congress has been conducting election meetings in view of the upcoming polls, while always ensuring the meetings are held peacefully to prevent any form of poll violence.
Recounting the incident of December 12, Dr Ratankumar said that BJP workers started harassing Congress workers without any reason on that day.
As he was present in the area, he de-escalated the situation and the meeting went on as scheduled.
However, at midnight, police started searching for Congress workers, which is likely to have been instigated by the Local BJP MLA and his group, he observed.
Condemning the misuse of an autonomous department such as the police to harass and arrest innocent people; the ex-MLA appealed to all concerned especially government leaders to ensure such incidents are not repeated in future and the polls are held peacefully.
On the other hand, the womenfolk of Mayang Imphal Konchak Sapam Mamang Leikai staged a sit-in protest on Tuesday, condemning the incident.
Speaking on the sidelines, one of the women named Sapam Bijamala recalled that a sit-in was also staged on Monday at the local community hall in strong condemnation of the incident.
However, several police personnel were deployed to disrupt the sit-in, which resulted in a brief stand-off during which father of the local MLA arrived at the scene and made verbal insults.
As such, the people of Mayang Imphal Konchak Sapam Mamang Leikai have decided to boycott MLA K Robindro, she informed.
