Imphal, September 04 2026: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has asserted that the Government of India and the State Government must be having a hidden agenda behind the attempt to get the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updated without any base year.

A large number of people belonging to both Meitei and Naga communities today staged a sit-in-protest under the banner "No NRC, No Census" at Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai.

The protest was organised by the Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai Panthoi Women Association and the protesters shouted several slogans like "No NRC, No Census", "No IDP resettlement, No Census", "No NRC without base year" .

Speaking to media persons at the protest site, JFD finance secretary Sunil Karam remarked that even though a resolution has been adopted in the State Assembly to update the NRC before census, no base year has been specified yet.

Had the resolution been adopted with a base year, it would be far convenient to pursue the matter with the Centre, he said.

Sunil Karam appealed to the State Government not to act in any manner inconsistent or contradictory to the collective demand of JFD and the indigenous people to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year.

He said that the State Government must not relinquish its responsibility just because the State Assembly has adopted a resolution to update the NRC and the same resolution has been sent to the Centre.

The State Government leaders must go to Delhi soon after the Assembly session and come back with a concrete assurance from Central leaders that the NRC will be updated in Manipur with 1951 as the base year, Sunil Karam said.

He urged the State Government to fulfil its responsibility by taking pro-active roles in the efforts to get the NRC updated.

The issue of updating the NRC is a question of death and survival for the indigenous people of Manipur, he said.

Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai Panthoibi Women Association general secretary S Bidyapati too urged the Government of India and the State Government to update the NRC with 1951 as the base year.

She appealed to all the MLAs of both ruling and Opposition parties to work collectively on the issue of updating the NRC and see that the indigenous people's demand is fulfilled.
