Imphal, May 14 2023:
World Meetei Council (WMC) organised a demon-stration at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on Sunday with SOS call to Government of India by raising three critical points for survival of Meetei community in Manipur.
Through the demonstra-tion, WMC raised demand for constitutional protection towards Meetei communi-ty.
The council maintained that Meetei community has been demanding constitu-tional protection for their survival for the past 11 years.
Constitutional protection to Meetei can only allow them to survive against the rap-idly changing demography caused by the influx of illegal migrants from the neigh-bouring country Myanmar.

It also demanded the Cen-tre to implement NRC in the state while maintaining that presence of illegal immi-grants needs to be verified and it is the need of the hour.
This will help safeguard not only Meetei but all the in-digenous communities of Manipur.
The third demand is to protect indigenous people from atrocities.
The illegal migrant community with the support of their armed mil-itants has been carrying out atrocities to the indigenous community systematically since 1993 and this has to be stopped at any cost, it contended.
The council also posed how Meeteis are barred from buying lands and settling in the hill areas whereas all communities are allowed to buy land and settle in the valley area, which consti-tutes only 10 per cent of the state's total land.
In such situation, the land holding share of Meeteis is dimin-ishing every day and the community is on the verge of losing their homes, which validates the need for a con-stitutional protection.
WMC also sought atten-tion of all the citizens of the country and the Government of India to understand the challenging ground situa-tion which has now led to a national security issue.
It should not be too late to realise the issues of the state by the Centre, WMC said while seeking an appoint-ment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union home minister at the earliest.
