Imphal, May 14 2023:
Inter-State passenger service vehicles plying along the Imphal-Dimapur (NH2) and Imphal-Jiribam (NH-37) roads have stopped all vehicular movements from today following a decision made by four transporters organisations to the same effect.
During a meeting convened on May 13, Joint Transporters Committee Manipur (JOTCOM), All Manipur Inter-State Bus Committee and Allied Transport Association, Imphal-Silchar Road Transporters' Welfare Society and Inter-State Transport Association jointly resolved to halt all vehicular movement of inter-State passenger service vehicles along the National Highways in light of miscreants from a certain community hindering the movement of these vehicles along Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Jiribam road and the failure of the Government to provide adequate security for the safety of the passengers and drivers.
Speaking to this reporter today, Wangjam Sanatomba, co-convenor, JOTCOM alleged that in many instances troublemakers from one community have stopped the inter-state passenger service vehicles to check for people belonging to a specific community and in extreme cases they have burned and vandalized the vehicles.
Sanatomba asserted that a report from the Central Government has informed of free-flow of vehicular movement along the National Highways even as instances of violence continues unabated in different sections of the highways by miscreants.
Denouncing such 'false reports', he called it unfortunate that the Government has claimed to have taken up the necessary security measures along National Highways and yet incidents of drivers, handymen and passengers being harassed or worse continue to pour in.
He further shared that as a result of these unfortunate incidents, around 85 inter-State passenger service vehicles, including buses and wingers, have been stranded in different locations outside Manipur.
The four organisations have also resolved to submit a memorandum to Kuldiep Singh, Security Advisor to the Government of Manipur, demanding the stranded passenger vehicles be escorted back into the State with adequate security.
The JOTCOM co-convenor lastly appealed to all unauthorized inter-State passenger service agents to cease all vehicular movement along the National Highways until'the Government comes up with a solution.
