Thoubal, September 07 2022:
A sit-in protest was staged by women vendors of Wangjing Lamding Market at its premises on Wednesday demanding proper toilets for the market.
The protestors held placards demanding toilet facility for the women vendors as well as placing of large number of dustbins for the market.
Speaking to media persons, one of the protestors, Khundrakpam Bisoriya pointed out that although Wangjing-Lamding Market is one of the major markets pf Thoubal district and being a part of Imphal-Moreh road is visited by people of various communities, it has been more than one year since the public toilet for the market remains non-functional.
She informed that women vendors had repeatedly complained regarding the matter to Wangjing Lamding Municipal Council officials, but till now no action has been taken up on the ground that people of surrounding areas have raised objections to construction of toilet.
Bisoriya appealed to people of nearby area not to oppose construction of public toilet and if they have any, they should clearly state the reason behind their objection to the public.
They should support construction of public toilet as the market is for the whole public, she stressed.
Mentioning that Wangjing Lamding Municipal Council had suggested another location for the toilet but it was found not suitable, she pointed out that vendors arrive at the market at 6 am and close their business at 7 pm and till then they have to endure the nature's calls as the toilet remains non-functional.
The vendors have to forgo shame and relieve themselves in the open which is highly unsanitary and risky for health.
Considering the condition, authority concerned must look into the matter to resolve it as early as possible, Bisoriya demanded.
