Consultative meet on drugs held at Ramva village

Continuing awareness campaign under the state government's War on Drugs initiative, a two-day consultative meeting on drug abuse and poppy plantation was held at Ramva village in Ukhrul district on September 6 and 7 .
The consultation was organised jointly by Tangkhul Baptist Churches Forum Ukhrul (TBCFU) and Ramva Baptist Church in coordination with Tangkhul Naga Long S, Tangkhul Shanao Long, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL) and NGOs from 22 villages of the area.
Around 200 people including headmen and village authority members, pastors and church leaders, women leaders and youth leaders from neighbouring villages took part in the meeting.
The participants engaged in an extensive and meaningful discussion about the current state of drug abuse, addiction, its impact on families and society in the area, and the spread of poppy cultivation in the twin districts of Kamjong and Ukhrul.
A session was also facilitated to deliberate ways to save youngsters from falling into the trap of drug addiction, as well as on how the community could help people, who are already addicted to drugs.
The issue of poppy cultivation and illicit drug manufacture was also thoroughly examined, with the conclusion that it is the responsibility of everyone, who participated in the meeting, to do their part in mitigating the concerns.
Meanwhile, a cluster committee covering 22 villages of the area was constituted with headman of Ramva village Wungnaoyo Zimik as its convener during the two-day consultation.
The committee was subsequently entrusted to spearhead the campaign against drugs and initiate necessary steps for fighting against drug abuse and poppy plantation in the area.
