Folk festival workshop begins

A folk festival workshop organised by Manipur Centre for Tribal Performing (MCTP) Arts under the aegis of NEC, Shillong on the theme 'Preservation and promotion of indigenous festivals of Kabui (Rongmei) ' has begun at Tingkao Ragwang Kalum Lai, Chingmeirong from Tuesday.
Speaking at the inaugu ral function of the 10-day, workshop, Nungba MLA Dinganglung (Dipu) Gangmei reminded that culture add identity are essential to the people and stressed that in contemporary world of globalisation and privatisation, there is an urgent need to work together for protection and preservation of culture and identity.
Delivering the key note address, MCTP Art president Poudongai Kamson noted that external factors and forces have been impacting the tribals who are following their indigenous religion.
The workshop is being organised with an objective to preserve the indigenous festivals and culture, he added.
The workshop will strive to revive songs and dances which are under the ambit of indigenous culture.
The government has been making efforts for preservation of culture.
But there is the need for joint initiative from the side of the public to preserve and protect it as well, he maintained.
Urging ethnic communities of the state to protect their indigenous culture and tradition, Poudongai opined that it will help in building Communal harmony among the communities.
The inaugural function was also attended by Art and Culture director L Kishworjit and Kalyan Ashram vice president Chungkeirung Kamei among others.
Cultural dances and songs were performed as a part of the event.
