Imphal, April 05 2022:
Governor La Ganesan lauded 10-year old environmental and climate activist Licypriya Kangujam on Tuesday for her fight against climate change.
Licypriya met the governor at Raj Bhawan as a part of her global efforts to make climate education mandatory in the school curriculum.
She highlighted various environmental issues and also discussed strategy to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India's net zero carbon emission by 2070 .
The governor presented Licypriya with a traditional Zou shawl and assured of his full support to her cause.
He told Licypriya to go in line with the government and their various initiatives to mitigate climate change and also to meet PM Modi to amplify her voice.
Licypriya informed the governor that Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Delhi have started a process to include climate, education in their state school syllabus to engage young people especially school-going children to fight climate change from the grassroots.
Italy is the first country in the world which made climate education mandatory in schools, she said.
Talking to media persons after meeting the governor, Licypriya noted that education is an essential factor in the ever more urgent fight against climate change.
Knowledge regarding this phenomenon helps young people to understand and tackle the consequences of global warming, encourages them to change their behaviour and helps them to adapt to what is already a global emergency.
The success of such initiatives is largely dependent on environmental literacy drives among the population that are often strangers to major political agreements and development of a culture of care for the climate.
As a part of its commitment to education on climate change, Licypriya said: "It is just as important to make progress in areas such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and formulating effective government policies as it is to provide education and training to raise awareness in as wide an audience as possible" .
She also stressed on the need to talk about global warming, greenhouse gases, renewable energy, carbon footprint, deforestation, recycling, green jobs, green taxes, water footprint, sustainable food, etc.
To a query raised by the media, she responded that in Manipur, major impact of climate change is floods, drought, heatwaves, rising temperature, water scarcity, forest wildfire, etc.
However, it is regrettable that only few people understand the root cause of the problem while most of the children are not even aware of the words "Climate Change" which is affecting their health everyday due to air pollution, etc.
"It's time for people to wake up and open their eyes and send their children and grandchildren to fight for their own survival and for their own future", maintained Licypriya, who had among others, addressed the world leaders at the United Nations Climate Conference 2019 (COP25) in Madrid, Spain urging them to take immediate climate action.
She is one of the youngest climate and environment activists globally.
Licypriya has been campaigning for climate action in India since 2018, to pass new laws to curb India's high pollution levels, and to make climate-change literacy mandatory in schools.
