Imphal, September 19 2022:
Former chairman of a UG group RK Meghen has stressed the role of writers in a society as they bring out the challenges faced by the society and present them to the public with critical analysis so as to create awareness.
Meghen shared his opinion while attending the inaugural function of a three-day International Literary cum Cultural Event which is being held under the theme 'History, culture and literature of Manipur and Diaspora' at Manipur University centenary hall on Monday.
Apunba Khorirolgi Malemgi Lup Imphal, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal branch, Ningol Khut Wangjing, Loyalam Library Wangjing, Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) and Malemgi Yelhoulon Aphong Lup Mayang Imphal Maibam are jointly organising the event.
Speaking on the occasion, RK Meghen appreciated the congregation of Manipuri writers from different parts of the world wherein they will be discussing a wide range of topics as the writers play important role in shaping the society.
Unfortunately, writers in Manipur seem to be working within the framework and boundary of the respective organisation they belong to.
While their contribution is important for the society, there is the need for emergence of a new generation of writers, who are more conscious of the societal need and work beyond the boundaries of the literary organisations and bring them together for a common objective, he said.
The proverb 'Sword is mightier than pen' is a meaningful statement, which needs to be understood.
Writers need to bring out the challenges of the society, and motivate the public to understand the issues and search for solutions by presenting critical analysis of those challenges, the former rebel leader said.
He also mentioned how multiple attempts are being made by some writers or sections of society to fabricate the history and mislead the younger generations.
One should understand that true patriots will never indulge in such senseless fabrication of history, he contended.
Apunba Khorirolgi Malemgi Lup president Waikhom Amuchou Meitei, National Board MSMI member Robin Blackie, Short Story Society India president L Gulap, and literary & social activist from Hojai, Assam KC Mangang also attended the inaugural programme as presidium members.
