Gold worth ₹79 lakh seized, two held

Imphal, September 19 2022:
A team of Anti-Smuggling Unit of Customs Division, Imphal recovered 1242 grams of gold from a man at Imphal International airport.
The arrested person has been identified as Shakir Ahmed (26), son of Abdul Hakim of Lilong Atoukhong in Thoubal district.
According to Unit's deputy commissioner Keerthishri S, on September 15 acting on the basis of specific information that a person named Shakir Ahmed would be carrying gold of foreign origin, a team of the Unit led by Superintendent (A/S) detained the said person at the Airport and subjected to thorough checking.
Eventually four oval shaped packets of gold in paste form weighing 1242 grams were recovered from his rectum the deputy commissioner said, while adding that Shakir Ahmed was intercepted at the departure hall of the Airport while trying to board an Air India flight (No AI890) scheduled for departure from Imphal at 12:20 pm.
The value of the seized gold after extraction was estimated at Rs 54,97,332.A case has been registered and Shakir Ahmed arrested under Section 104 of Customs Act, 1962, the officer added.
In another case on September 11, based on specific information, a team of customs officers led by Superintendent (A/S) intercepted one Maruti-EcoVan(MN01 AS 7696) at Khongjom area and brought the same to customs office, Imphal along with the driver and one passenger for thorough checking.
At the office, the lady passenger who identified herself as Mayengbam Jinat Devi wife of Mayengbam Selung Singh of Lilong Arapti Maning Leikai under Lilong Sub-Division, Thoubal confessed and took out three gold biscuits from her innerwear which is estimated to worth Rs 25,39,800.Further investigations of both the cases are underway, the deputy commissioner added in a statement.
