KKL to check rehab centres, bans one

Taking serious note of frequent incidents of death of inmates in rehabilitation or de-addiction centres across the state, Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) has said that they will start checking the rehab centres from now on to prevent such incidents.
A statement of KKL issued in this regard also informed that they have banned Revive Drug De-Addition and Rehabilitation Centre, Utlou Chanura Makhong following the death of an inmate from Nambol Phoijing on June 2 .
All the staff and functionaries including owners of the rehab centre have also been banned from taking up any activities related with rehabilitation or de-addiction, the statement said, while urging other rehab centres not to provide jobs to them.
The statement also demanded the government to investigate into the June 2 incident and deliver justice to the victim.
Uncontrolled and unregulated establishment of rehabilitation centres, absence of proper policy of the government as well as enforcing mechanism are the main factors of such crimes, the statement said, while stressing the need for proper infrastructure and trained manpower for running the rehabilitation centres.
Picking up drug users from the street without the.
knowledge and consent of their parents or guardians, and maltreatment of addicts by law enforcing agencies instead of treating them as patients are also the main factors contributing to such unwanted consequences, the statement said, while expressing concern over the trend of setting up rehab centres as commercial units.
Maintaining that saving the youth should be the primary responsibility for a bright future of the society, the statement informed that KKL will begin random inspection of the rehabilitation centres.
The statement also assured of support to the state government's War on Drugs campaign.
