Imphal, October 19 2021:
Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham amadi Saktam Kanba Lup has appealed to shops in Imphal city not to sell local handloom products and keep these products exclusive for the women vendors to deal in.
Addressing a press meet at Ima Keithel No 1 on Tuesday, Lup general secretary Thingujam Rani said that selling of the local handloom products in shops is affecting the women market in Imphal and asked the shops to cease trading these products.
She also warned of facing unwanted consequences if the shops were found selling these products and said that the shop owners shall be held responsible for any such eventuality.
Importing machine woven products imitating the local designs has also diminished the value of local handloom products, she added.
On the other hand, selling the same products sold inside Leimarel Sidabi Ima Keithel by roadside vendors has not only created additional traffic congestions but also severely affected the trade in the market complex, she pointed out, while drawing attention of the state government and Imphal Municipal Corporation to frame a policy for addressing these issues.
She also appealed to licensed vendors not to sell their wares on the roadside instead of their allotted seats.
