Imphal, May 30 2013:
The ongoing construction work on Thumbu Bridge over Imphal River connecting Yaiskul in Imphal West district and Brahmapur Nahabam Leikai in Imphal East district in full swing during this rainy season has created fear and unrest in the minds of the general public.
The construction work on the bridge for making it a double lane system has been going on for the last three years at an estimated cost of Rs 6 crores.
It is being constructed under the Works Department, Government of Manipur.
Initially, the construction work was targeted to be completed within a year.
However, even after more than three years, the bridge is far from completion and construction work on the upper portion of the bridge is currently going on in a war footing manner.

When Hueiyen Lanpao went to inspect the progress of the construction work on the bridge, it was found that the making of wooden and iron frames for the main portion of the bridge is presently being taken up.
With the advent of monsoons, the water level of Imphal River too has risen the newly made iron and wooden frames carried away by the strong water current of the river.
It is feared that with the rise in the level of water, the force of the current would carry away the whole upper frame of the bridge.
Under such circumstances, not only the iron and wooden frames of the upper part of the bridge, where huge amount of money has been spent, would be destroyed, but the lives of the labourers would be in danger, local residents have pointed out.
