Imphal, April 12 2018:
The Central Government has approved the sanctioning of Rs 400 crore and Rs 100 crore respectively for the cleaning of solid waste particles from Loktak lake and Nambul river, according to L
Radhakishor, Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Broad (MPCB) .
Speaking to media persons
at a one day sensitization
workshop/ awareness of biological solid waste organised
for the students of RIMS at
the office of Manipur Pollution Control Board today, the
Chairman said that in the last
one year, under the present
Government, MPCB has
taken up various programmes
and the one day sensitization
cum workshop on biological
solid waste has also been held
to provide awareness to the
MBBS students of RIMS.
He said that MPCB is presently monitoring various types
of pollution in the State, including climate and
environment changes as well.
One of the pressing concerns is regarding the proper
treatment and disposal of the
biological solid waste products from the Government and
private hospitals of the State.
The Chairman said that
most of the private hospitals
were initially found without
proper treatment facility for
their wastes as they did not
have proper dumping site and
proper treatment facilities for
the solid waste
However, recently MPCB
carried out an enquiry in connection with the issue and
found that some of the hospitals had started installing
wastes treatment machines/facilities, due to the awareness
given by the MPCB, he
claimed.
To provide awareness about the impact of
biological solid wastes, how
to give proper treatment and
control the solid wastes,
MPCB is looking forward to
organising a mega awareness
program in every district of
the State, he said and added
that he has already held a
meeting with Chief Minister
N Biren regarding the same.
He also said that MPCB is
looking forward to form a
district level committee for
organising the awareness
camp, consisting of the DCs
concerned, SPs, ZEOs, PHED
EEs, club and student community.
Pointing out that the programme will be carried out in
various phases, Radhakishor
said that during the awareness
program more than 4000
schools and 100 colleges all
over the State will be covered.
All the necessary arrangements have been made and
MPCB is planning to launch
the programme by the end of
April, he said and informed
that the Chief Minister will
launch the programme.
The State Govt is looking
after the current pollution
problem of Nambul river and
Loktak lake.
Seeking to establish two projects, namely
Nambul and Waishel Maril
River Development and
Loktak Lake Periphery Development, the State Government
sent necessary DPR to the
Central Govt.
The Centre has sanctioned
the necessary amounts for the
two projects to be carried out
over a span of 15 years, from
foreign funding, under Central
sponsored scheme.
The previous Govt had sent
proposals for the lake City and
as follow up process, the
present Govt recast the DPR
and was given approval by the
Centre, he said.
Radhakishor
continued that the project will
cost Rs 100 crore and Rs 400
crore for Nambul river and
Loktak lake respectively .
