Moreh sizzles at 40, as state records 35.4 degree Celsius

Heat wave condition prevails in the Indo-Myanmar border town of Moreh with mercury touching 39-40 degree Celsius, subsequently forcing the denizens to remain indoors between 11 am and 3pm.Classes for Kg 1 to Class 1 are being conducted from 9 am to 12 noon and for Class 2 to Class 10 from 9am to 2.30 pm as per a government order.
However, in view of the present weather condition, parents and guardians have opined that the education department should change timing of school hours with special priority on students of Moreh.
In sync with the rise in the mercury level, rivers and wells in and around the town are also drying up fast.
Meanwhile, as severe heatwave condition prevails in some parts of India particularly in northern and eastern regions since the past few days, Manipur recorded maximum day temperature of 35.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday even as the Centre has alerted states and Union Territories to take precautionary measures against the heatwave.
As per report available from KVK Chandel, the maximum day temperature was recorded at 35.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday at Chandel and the minimum at 16.3 degree Celsius.
Humidity recorded in the morning at Chandel was 62 percent and 19 percent in the afternoon.
Another report from AMFU, Lamphelpat said that most of the valley areas of the state recorded maximum temperature of 32.4 degree Celsius on Tuesday and minimum of 22.1 degree Celsius.
Humidity in the morning was recorded at 56 percent and 44 percent in the afternoon, the report said.
Meanwhile, the ministry of labour & employment has issued an advisory to states and Union Territories for taking up precautionary measures so that the prevailing heatwave does not make the workers and labourers working in different sectors to suffer.
As per a report of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), certain regions of India particularly the North East, northern, central and north western will have much higher temperature than normal this year.
Accordingly, the report advised all the states and UTs to take up certain measures like changing working hours for employees, workers and labourers of all sectors, ensure drinking water and essentials items facilities at work sites.
Based on the IMD report, the Centre also instructed health department of all the states/UTs to make the people aware about the precautionary measures.
With sudden increase in day temperature in the state, the directorate of health services and National Health Mission advised people to drink water adequately even if not thirsty to prevent from the ill effects of heatwave.
It also appealed to people to drink ORS and fruit juices, made at home and eat fruits and vegetables adequately.
The advisory also said that people should wear hat, thin cotton clothes and use umbrella while going out from home.
Sections of people susceptible to heatwave are infants, pregnant women, labourers working under sunlight, people suffering from depression and aged people, it said and advised people not to venture out of home between 12 noon and 3pm.The advisory also said that doors and windows must be kept open to prevent from heatwave and consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, soft drink and beverage with high sugar content should be avoided during high temperature.
It also said that consumption of high protein food must be avoided and children should not be left inside parked vehicles.
