World Heritage Day 2023 celebrated

Art & Culture Commissioner M Joy has categorically asserted that a community must be aware of its history and live by it in order to ensure its continued existence.
He was speaking at the observance programme of World Heritage Day 2023 organised by the Manipur State Archaeology, Department of Art & Culture today at Kangla, Imphal.
The observance programme was held under the theme "Heritage Changes" and was accompanied by a quiz competition, painting competition and photo exhibition.
Aside from this, a storytelling session was hosted by K Gunachandra Sharma, teacher, Pettigrew Junior High School on the subject "Anglo Manipur War 1891" .
Speaking as the chief guest, Commissioner M Joy stated that ethnic communities must live by their ancestral history and safeguard their historical sites.

There is a great need to spread awareness about these heritage sites among the younger generation as well as the older generations.
The older generations must also educate the youth about the past and notable historical events, he maintained.
The Commissioner then highlighted the need for collective effort to preserve and safeguard one's culture, traditions and customs.
"One has the freedom to practice the religion of their choice, however one cannot change their ethnicity.
Hence, it is important to abide by one's customs", he said.
He added that it is the collective responsibility of all to protect and preserve the heritage sites and archaeological sites.
Delivering the keynote address, K Sashikanta, Superintendent, Manipur State Archaeology emphasized on the need to protect the tangible cultural heritage sites in view of the future generations.
He added that the quiz and painting competitions were organised to educate the children about these sites.
Altogether 161 students from various Government schools in the State participated in today's competitions.
The top three winners were awarded a cash prize of Rs 2000, Rs 1500 and Rs 1000 along with a memento each.
Consolation prizes of Rs 500 in cash and a memento were also handed over to five participants.
The function was attended by Professor N Joykumar, former HoD, MU and L Kishworjit, Director, Art & Culture.
