A youth in his mid 30s was produced before Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal West for allegedly attempting to murder his elder brother yesterday and subsequently remanded to judicial custody till May 2 .
Paul Kamei (36) identified as a 'habitual offender' has been remanded to judicial custody till May 2 .
Paul Kamei is son of Huthumang Kamei of Langol Tarung and he was arrested by Lamphel police yesterday night based on a complaint lodged by his elder brother, Jitkhanlung Kamei.
The complaint alleged that Paul had tried to kill him using knives.
In the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, the Investigating Officer of the case, through Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP), submitted that Paul is a habitual offender and he had served time in jail earlier.
Paul was convicted in a case of attempted murder and sexual assault of a minor in 2017.He was imprisoned for 5 years and six months at Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa.
He was released from jail on April 15 recently.
The APP submitted that Paul Kamei had allegedly promised to kill his father and the witnesses who gave statements against him in the case.
The APP submitted that Paul Kamei, even after spending 5 years in prison had not reformed and 'is still thinking about taking the lives of the witnesses' .
After his release, Paul Kamei was looking for his father, the witnesses and his brother-in-law.
He allegedly mentioned that his cell-mate was a member of an underground outfit and they had planned a plot to kill a Minister in the Manipur Government, submitted the APP.
The APP continued that yesterday, at around 11.30 am, Paul Kamei took out two knives from inside a bag saying that knives were brought by him from the prison to kill his brother.
Relatives intervened and they managed to snatch away the knives.
According to the complaint, Paul was under the influence of alcohol since morning and he even harassed and assaulted students who were standing at the entrance of a coaching centre at Langol Tarung.
When a lady intervened, he allegedly strangled her.
He then disrupted a meeting that was going on at a nearby community hall by throwing bricks and challenging everybody.
People at the meeting subdued him and locked him inside a room at Langol Tarung Youth Club.
The accused, Paul Kamei is a danger to the society, submitted the APP.
The IO, through APP also submitted that Paul Kamei had admitted to have committed the crimes.
The Court, on perusal of the submissions, remanded Paul Kamei to judicial custody till May 2 .
