Churachandpur, April 18 2023:
Hardly three months since the inauguration of the Churachandpur Medical College (CMC) by Union home minister Amit Shah, some parts of the college building were damaged due to the cyclonic storm that swept across most of Churachandpur district around Sunday midnight.
The destruction caused to the CMC building has raised questions about quality of the building construction.
The storm blew away some wall panels of the College building mainly the library section of the academic block (main building) on the third floor.
Some parts of the wall on the backyard facing west were also blown off by the storm, which also caused damage to walls and ceilings of the emergency medicine block and other structures on the second floor.
The said floor is planned for use as eye ward though it has not yet been occupied.
The director of the medical college, S Iboyaima visited the damage site on Monday morning.
Talking to this daily, the director informed that repair works of the damage portions will be carried out with immediate effect.
He maintained that the building is a prefabricated one with a panel and weightless walls and it is very strong.
The director, however, added that there are portions where some gaps allow air/ wind to pass through.
According to site engineer Venkat of the Keystone Infra Construction Company Ltd, which constructed the building, they never compromise on quality and assured that such thing will not recur in future.
The college building was inaugurated by Amit Shah on January 6.Meanwhile, reports have been received that the storm razed to the ground three houses at B Mualhoih village.
The houses belonged to Lalminsang, Kapkhetpau and Suanminthang.
Lalminsang also suffered sustained injuries in the abdomen area while trying to save family members as the house started to crumble.
Local residents and organisational members are extending help in rebuilding the three houses.
The storm also caused damage to electric poles near Don Bosco School and wall fencing of the Public Ground.
